United States is top international shopping destination

International visitors are being drawn to the United States for its lucrative shopping opportunities, research from the International Shopping Traveler Survey reveals.

The Sun Sentinel reports the findings that 30 per cent of international visitors to the US cited shopping as a factor in their choice of destination. Top shopping destinations include New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Orlando and San Francisco.

Increased visitors catered for with Eiffel Tower development

Paris’ iconic Eiffel Tower is set to undergo development that will see its highest public viewing platform double in capacity. The project has been won by city firm Sereo Architects of Paris and aims to significantly decrease public waiting times, which can reach over an hour at peak times, by allowing up to 1,700 people to reach the third observation tower per hour.

Sereo were chosen to represent the challenge by the Societe d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE) who sought a solution to the Tower’s problems in time to celebrate its 120th Anniversary.

Bavaria great for bargain holidays

The Bavaria region in Germany boasts great monetary value for tourists, according to the latest promotion by the German National Tourist Office. Tourists can currently enjoy deals on holidays to Bavaria with added discounts and incentives available to make their stay even better. The south-east German region boasts excellent activities and outdoor leisure pursuits, which attract cycling, skiing, golfing and climbing enthusiasts every year.

Opodo News reports that the region’s accommodation options – some 300 hotels, B&B’s and hostels – are ready to offer guests added extras to enhance their stay and increase bookings. Incentives for guests include complimentary travel passes, including passes for ski lifts and mountain cable cars, as well as free entry to sites of interest and museums.

New campaign promotes ‘essence’ of Australia

Australia has launched a new multi million dollar campaign to rebrand the country and attract more international visitors.

AFP reports that the government will spend 20 million dollars AUS to reinvent the nation’s image for a new generation of tourists, capturing what Trade Minister Simon Crean describes as the “essence of Australia.”

Asian tourist industry to recover by 2010

The Asian tourism industry is predicted to recover well by the close of 2009 but not without some casualties, the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) reports. PATA also forecasts a rise in inbound tourism to the region of almost 20 per cent by 2011, based on figures from 2007.

The region has suffered significantly at the hands of recent recession, with popular countries such as Thailand, Cambodia and Hong Kong noticing a decline of up to three per cent in inbound foreign tourism in the final quarter of 2008.

Halloween alien invasion planned for Hong Kong Disneyland

Hong Kong Disneyland Resort has unveiled plans for a new Halloween attraction.

Based on an alien invasion theme, the new attraction will form part of the park’s Haunted Halloween series of events running beginning on 18 September and concluding on 31 October. Previous popular Halloween attractions such as the Demon Jungle, Main Street Haunted Hotel, Space Mountain’s Ghost Galaxy and the Glow in the Park Halloween Parade will also be making returns as part of this year’s intergalactic festivities.

Edinburgh Festivals to offer high-profile tickets to tour operators

Tickets for the most high-profile events at Edinburgh‘s many summer festivals will be offered to tour operators months in advance, according to a report in the Scotsman newspaper.

The best seats at shows across Edinburgh’s 12 festivals – including the Edinburgh Fringe, the International Festival and the International Book Festival – can be reserved by travel firms under the plan in order to create package deals and attract new audiences.

American Congress moves to lift ban on Cuba travel

Members of Congress in the United States have joined forces to support a bill that could lift the ban on American travel to Cuba.

Both Democratic and Republican party members are proposing the bill, which would end the decades-old ban that prevents Americans from traveling to Cuba. Experts are noting that the move could mark the beginning of a new generation of relations between Washington and Havana.
