A new marketing campaign has been launched to promote Singapore as a value-for-money destination for international travellers.
Travel Biz Monitor reports that the campaign ’2009 reasons to meet in Singapore’ has been launched by the Singapore Tourism Board to draw business visitors to Singapore with a range of deals and promotions on attractions, accommodation, leisure and meeting venues. 25 major hotels in Singapore are participating in the promotion, with deals such as four nights for the price of three and discounts on spa treatments and dining provided for business travellers who bring their partners along.

Tonight, Glasgow will expand on its status as a Unesco City of Music by hosting the highly anticipated Mobo awards.
According to The Times, this will be the first time that the awards have been held outside London, and will boost Glasgow’s reputation as a place in touch with all musical forms as well as generate significant revenue for the city.

Scotland‘s tourism industry is enjoying continuing success as both international and domestic visitors continue to be drawn to attractions and events in the country despite the recession.
The Scotsman reports that Scottish tourism is benefitting from the ‘staycation’ trend that is seeing more British holidaymakers taking domestic trips to save money, as well as highly publicised festivities such as the Year of Homecoming, which has proved enormously successful in attracting visitors from overseas by hosting a range of more than 400 events under a single national banner.

The culinary skills of world leading chef Ferrán Adrià will be used to bring tourists back to Spain.
According to the Times, Mr Adrià is widely regarded as the world’s best chef, famous for creative luxury dishes such as soft-boiled quail’s egg with caramel crust, or a polenta of powdered Parmesan cheese. The celebrity chef is poised to head the Tourism Management and Gastronomy School, where he will teach. He hopes to encourage tourism bosses to vary their business models by providing tourists with innovative and unique dining options.

Following the release of the latest European beaches report, the British government has pledged to clean-up the small minority of beaches across the country that fall short of cleanliness standards.
In the study of 2008 water cleanliness standards, which surveyed over 21,000 bathing spots in 27 EU countries, 96 per cent of the total coastal bathing areas and 92 per cent of bathing sites in rivers and lakes around the UK were found to be of the right standard.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is collaborating with the nation’s Ministry of Tourism to introduce a new tourism marketing initiative aimed at boosting interest in Uganda tourism and improving conservation.
The Daily Monitor reports that the ‘Friend a Gorilla’ campaign is aimed at online tourism marketing, and invites internet users to track the movements of Uganda’s native mountain gorillas through online social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, in addition to other tourism related activities. By targeting its campaign towards popular social networking sites, the UWA states that it is hoping to benefit from “a shift from the use of brochures to modern technology in marketing the country’s tourism potential.”

A new series of tours based on the life and works of Mahatma Gandhi is being developed to increase tourism to India.
The ‘Gandhi Tour’ is part of the Central Government’s initiative to bring tourists to the nation who are interested in Gandhi’s work, following a recent surge in interest that has seen Gandhi’s name being mentioned in speeches by United States President Barack Obama, among others. Development of the project is being overseen by Gandhi’s grandson, West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi.

The Institute of Commercial Management reports that 500 University graduates struggling to find jobs in the recession can apply for a bursary to work abroad.
This initiative is being funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) in conjunction with youth and education charity Raleigh, and will see each organisation contribute £1,000 towards a ten-week expedition for a recent graduate under 24 years of age, if such an excursion is proven to be beyond the graduate’s financial means.
