A travel critic has published a list of the ten most exhilarating touring holidays across the USA, for travellers looking to explore the nation’s most iconic rotes and destinations.

The Mirror’s travel editor Gill Williams offers her recommendations for the top road trips across North America, and it may come as no surprise that the famous Route 66 comes top of the list. To drive down the iconic road that takes in eight separate US states across its 2,448 mile length, tourists can rent a car in Chicago and head off from Grant Park, where the route officially begins, travelling all the way to Los Angeles on the other side of the country.

One million World Cup tickets go on sale in South Africa

With another one million tickets to next year’s World Cup going on sale from Johannesburg, Africans are being encouraged to support the events and buy their tickets now.

Sowetan reports that 700,000 tickets have already been sold for the 2010 football World Cup, which kicks off next summer in South Africa. Ticket sales are expected to be competitive, but at the third ticketing phase launch in Johannesburg this week, the event’s Local Organising Committee chief executive, Danny Jordan, said that Africans need to support their continent by not leaving their ticket purchases until the last minute.

Golden Gate Bridge tours for San Francisco

Visitors to San Francisco could soon be able to climb and explore the structure of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that officials in charge of the famous bridge are considering opening up its off-limits undersides and encouraging tourists to climb its cables and ride lifts to the top of its towers, provided this did not interfere with construction work.

New Las Vegas CityCenter prepares to open doors

The ambitious CityCenter development in Las Vegas will begin to open its doors to visitors from December 1, offering a world-class hotel, entertainment and shopping destination for travellers.

USA Today reports that the $8.5 billion project is aimed at expanding the appeal of the popular destination to provide luxury holidays for high-end travellers, with CityCenter CEO Bobby Baldwin calling it “the next step in the evolution of Vegas.”

Barcelona named top European holiday hotspot

A new poll has named Barcelona the number one holiday destination in Europe, for the range of experiences the city offers to travellers of all budgets.

The Catalonian capital placed first in a poll of 10,000 holidaymakers conducted by OnePoll, aimed at discovering the favourite holiday destination in Europe. A spokesperson for the research company explained: “It’s ideal because it’s not too far away for many Europeans, and just a short flight away for us Brits, which makes for a perfect weekend break.”
