A new poll has named Barcelona the number one holiday destination in Europe, for the range of experiences the city offers to travellers of all budgets.
The Catalonian capital placed first in a poll of 10,000 holidaymakers conducted by OnePoll, aimed at discovering the favourite holiday destination in Europe. A spokesperson for the research company explained: “It’s ideal because it’s not too far away for many Europeans, and just a short flight away for us Brits, which makes for a perfect weekend break.”
Active You reports that Barcelona is the ideal destination for credit crunch holidays in Spain, as great savings can be made on flights despite the current euro exchange rate. Barcelona Turisme head of foreign relations, Maria Luisa Albacar-Fracanzani states: “when flights are cheap the rest is really peanuts.”
The tourism body also revealed that the top five cultural sites attracting visitors to the city are Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera, Park Guell, the Picasso Museum and the Miro Foundation.
Spain was recently revealed to be the most popular eurozone holiday destination for international tourists throughout the recession, attracting 13.8 million visitors to cities like Barcelona and Madrid for a range of cultural experiences. Holidaymakers are also drawn to many areas of the country, including islands such as Majorca and Ibiza, by great deals on holiday packages.
Other European holiday destinations that scored highly in the OnePoll survey included England’s tranquil Lake District and Paris and Rome for edifying city breaks.
