Reports from Portuguese hotels and resorts suggest the country is attracting many travellers over the festive period despite a relatively quiet year.

The Portugal News reports that many hotels are seeing increased figures over Christmas and New Year, welcome news to tourism officials, who’ve been battling dwindling visitor numbers in Portugal recently.

Researchers claim that travel has evolved in reaction to social networking connections and recommendations.

The proliferation of social networking sites looks set to impact the travel sector, as increased numbers of people make use of the sites to create their travel plans. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, social media is replacing recommendations about holiday destinations from experts or strangers with recommendations from online friends and acquaintances.

Over half of Brits plan to travel more in 2010

A new study has found that more than half of UK holidaymakers are planning to take more holidays in 2010.

Travel Mole reports that a survey of more than 9,530 Europeans conducted by Travelzoo found that 42 per cent were planning to travel more next year than in 2009, with only 25 per cent stating that their level of travel would not increase. The figure was higher for the UK, with 55 per cent expressing the desire to take more holidays in the coming year.

More adventure holidays predicted for 2010

A rise in the number of people seeking adventurous holidays has been predicted for 2010 by ABTA.

The annual survey of the travel association has revealed a growing trend for adventure holidays as well as an increase in the number of British travellers looking to give something back on their trip. According to Travel Mole, this is resulting in a rise in adventure breaks combined with volunteer holidays, a phenomenon dubbed ‘chadventures’.

Spokesperson Frances Tuke said: “This year has been remarkably resilient for the travel industry, and prospects are looking good for 2010, with the trend to more adventurous destinations continuing.”

The Aria Hotel-Casino has opened its doors in Las Vegas, launching with a spectacular star-studded event that attracted 5,000 invited guests.
