India’s revamped Chennai Marina expected to draw sun seekers

A revamp of Chennai Marina is expected to draw tourists and sightseers to enjoy the seaside attraction in India.

The Marina beach in Chennai is second only to California when it comes to the size. However, its visitor numbers have not matched this distinction in the past, and the beach didn’t enjoy the number of tourists tourism officials and local businesses felt it deserved.

This looks set to change, however, as a plan to tempt western tourists to choose flights to Chennai for their next holiday has come to fruition. According to The Hindu, the beach fortification project, first posited in 2007, was officially launched by India’s Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi on Sunday and it is hoped that the resulting beachscape will help draw more than 50,000 visitors to the beach a day.

Funded by the Chennai Corporation, the project took the needs of many individuals into consideration when drawing up plans for the revamped beach and visitors on holiday in Chennai can enjoy plazas, gazeboes and pergolas as well as skateboarding parks on the seafront.

The entire length of the beach, from the Triumph of Labour Statue to the Light House, has been divided into 14 landscaped galleries and every effort has been made to preserve the natural beauty of the beach.

According to The Hindu, Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said: “Apart from the beautification project, the Corporation has started initiatives to make the beach more tourist-friendly.

“Five reverse-osmosis plants capable of providing 30,000 litres of drinking water an hour free of cost to visitors will be ready shortly.”

It is hoped that the efforts will boost Chennai’s reputation as a premier holiday destination among travellers.
