New campaign promotes travel to Southeast Asia

A new advertising campaign has been launched in 10 Southeast Asian countries, promoting holidays in Thailand and other destinations.

Taiwan News reports that the campaign aims to attract holidaymakers in the UK and North America into taking long haul flights to key destinations, and will also target the closer markets of India, Australia and Hong Kong.

Over 65s taking more long haul flights

Britons over 65 took a record number of flights in 2009, according to new statistics.

Sales of annual worldwide travel insurance for over 65s rose by 41 per cent year-on-year, according to Age Concern Enterprises. The company reported that many pensioners have been largely unaffected by the recession, and are taking more holidays in Europe as well as in long haul destinations.

Dominican Republic assures no disruption to travellers

The tourist ministry of the Dominican Republic is urging travellers to continue with their holiday plans in the nation, even as aid work continues in the neighbouring Haiti, with which it shares the island of Hispaniola.

“All of the tourist areas, hotels, resorts, airports and seaports are open and receiving visitors,” the ministry said in a press release. “The Dominican Republic experienced no damage from the quake or its aftershocks. Major tourism regions Punta Cana and La Romana on the East Coast, as well as Samaná and Puerto Plata along the North Coast are welcoming winter season tourists from all over the world.”

Super Bowl Miami is a super draw for tourists

For the next two weeks, American football fanatics will flock to Miami in hopes of catching the biggest game of the year – The Super Bowl.

Hosting the event for a record tenth time, the city hopes the worldwide coverage will display Miami for what they feel it is – on par with other great cities of the world such as Paris, Tokyo and Sydney.

The national tourism agency VisitBritain has launched a new campaign promoting British cities, by offering low cost flights in twelve European countries.

Travel Daily UK reports that this new Cities Campaign follows the success of last year’s See More Britain for Less initiative, which highlighted the savings that could be made on city breaks in major destinations across the UK.

Tourism in Africa is receiving a significant boost thanks to the 2010 World Cup and the ‘Obama effect.’

At a conference in Madrid, industry leaders revealed that the African continent bucked the global trend in tourism, largely due to high-profile events such as the World Cup and the election of a US President with African heritage which increased international interest.

Merlin to open Legoland in Florida

Merlin Entertainments is set to open a new Legoland theme park in Florida at the end of next year.

The entertainment company, which owns a number of major tourist attractions including the London Eye, is paying $22 million (approx £13.6 million) to acquire the 145-acre site located just half an hour from Orlando.

Holidays in Mauritius on the rise

Holidays in Mauritius are on the rise in 2010, with a resurgence in bookings for the first four months of the year spelling a bright future for the island’s tourism industry.

According to msnbc.com, luxury holiday destinations in the Indian Ocean have sought to keep visitor numbers up during the recession by offering significant price cuts. While this means that the tourism industry in Mauritius and the Seychelles may be bringing in less money compared to 2008, visitor numbers are actually on the rise – with a record number of flights to Mauritius being taken in December 2009.
