London is Europe’s ‘Ultimate Sport City’

If you’re looking for the ultimate football experience, or maybe a classic match of the top rugby professionals, London is the top place to see it in Europe, according to a recent sporting industry analysis.

Seeking to root out the top worldwide sites for sporting and other events, SportBusiness Group took information in a number of categories, with London topping the ‘XL’ city list as well as the category of best general hosting experience for events.

Brits ditching staycations in 2010

Those looking to make travel arrangements from Britain have begun to ditch the ‘staycation’ mentality of 2009 in favour of experiences and adventure holidays abroad in the coming year, a survey has revealed.

These findings from Avis Europe show that Britons are more interested in controlling their own agendas on holidays in 2010, and including more than one activity. For example, a car rental in Rome might afford a family the opportunity to visit major attractions such as the Coliseum, but could also open up short holidays to Naples, just down the Mediterranean coast.

The Eastern European country of Hungary has been raising eyebrows across Europe in recent times, for offering luxurious accommodation and inspiring attractions in destinations such as capital Budapest.

As well as being home to many ancient attractions and situated on stunning position on the River Danube, the Eastern capital falls outside of the eurozone, meaning visitors can live it up on holidays in Budapest, just on a fraction of the cost of other European destinations such as Rome or Paris.

The Antalya region of Turkey has been rising in profile in recent years, with holidaymakers flocking to the sun and sand of the Mediterranean coast to enjoy a summer holiday at a lower cost than many other European destinations.

Though suffering through a long-standing prejudice against its eating habits, the United Kingdom has recently experienced a resurgence of interest as a destination for foodies as the home of some of the world’s best chefs, including Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver and Heston Blumenthal.

Writing for the Metro World News, Dominic Midgley commented that, despite the negative stigma of yesteryear, “today’s tourists have a culinary treat in store” when visiting Britain for its cuisine.

UK holidaymakers still choosing Euro travel after volcano debacle

Research has shown that British nationals have retained their interest in European holiday destinations despite the air travel hold-up caused by the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland, as well as taking advantage of special late holiday deals for European and UK breaks.

According to information released by Skyscanner, an online travel website, UK destinations surged in popularity following the Iceland volcano, with London leading the way – possibly due to interest in city breaks in London for the Marathon and other attractions.

Egypt and Turkey holidays dominate online searches

The transcontinental state of Turkey and northern African nation of Egypt have topped the list of most popular holiday destination searches for another month, according to research from Greenlight.

Far and away the most popular European site, Turkey netted 550,000 searches from potential holidaymakers, possibly on the back of the appeal of city breaks in Istanbul, which has been named European Capital of Culture for 2010.

The range of exciting holiday experiences and a diversity of climate and habitats have kept Kenya as a leading tourist destination in Africa over the years, according to one expert.

The variance in the East African country’s geography – featuring beautiful coastlines along the Indian Ocean and vast plains abundant with exotic wildlife – was noted as a main draw for international tourists by Angie Sloan, regional director of the Kenya Tourist Board.
