Budapest boasts low cost city breaks

The Eastern European country of Hungary has been raising eyebrows across Europe in recent times, for offering luxurious accommodation and inspiring attractions in destinations such as capital Budapest.

As well as being home to many ancient attractions and situated on stunning position on the River Danube, the Eastern capital falls outside of the eurozone, meaning visitors can live it up on holidays in Budapest, just on a fraction of the cost of other European destinations such as Rome or Paris.

These features especially appeal to British travellers, according to Karin Jones, consultant for the Hungarian National Tourist Office. She explained: “Budapest’s luxuries, including four and five-star hotels, fine dining including their first Michelin-starred restaurant, are easily accessible to the average traveller with room rates starting from well under £100 per night.”

Costes restaurant, located on Ráday Street in Budapest, recently received the distinction of a Michelin star in its 2010 guide to the Main Cities of Europe. This makes Costes, which features a combination of traditional Hungarian cuisine and modern, international fare, only the second restaurant in Eastern Europe to be awarded this sought-after accolade.

But a spectacular dining experience is not the only draw for the Hungarian capital, as it also boasts a wide array of stunning architecture and leisure facilities. “Budapest is best known for its historic bridges, the Great Synagogue, the Danube and ornate thermal baths, but the city is also world-renowned for the standard of living it offers to both locals and visitors,” Ms Jones said.

Through its combination of unique food and drink, as well as value for money and the ready availability of flights to Budapest, the city has become a hit among holidaymakers looking for affordable city breaks.
