More Brits searching for long haul flights this summer

Long haul flights are continuing to grow in popularity as British travellers seek out exotic destinations this summer, according to the latest findings from a flight comparison website.

While holidays in Spain are still the top choices for most Brits heading abroad, with Alicante, Malaga and Palma being the three most searched-for destinations on Skyscanner for summer 2010, all the new entries to this year’s top 10 list are long haul flights, indicating changing trends compared to last year.

Religious tourism still going strong in 2010

One sector of the travel industry that has remained strong despite the global recession is religious tourism, with a number of faith-based events drawing international crowds this year, such as the Oberammergau Passion Play in Germany.

The landmark event takes place every 10 years in the town of Oberammergau, near Munich, and has been performed regularly since 1634 to honour a pact with God made by the villagers for sparing them from the Black Death that was laying waste to Europe at the time.

Travellers encouraged to visit Cape Town after World Cup

While many international visitors will be taking flights to Cape Town over the next few months to attend World Cup events, one travel writer has urged visitors interested in experiencing the city’s offerings to wait until after the crowds have left.

Writing for the Telegraph, Francisca Kellett explained that those visiting the South Africa city after the World Cup is over will be able to enjoy its improved infrastructure and facilities, without having to deal with the crowds and more expensive prices.

Chelsea Flower Show draws garden lovers to London

Despite concerns that the harsh winter may have harmed plant growth this spring, organisers of the Chelsea Flower Show have announced that this year’s event will still go ahead, and has been the fastest selling in more than 20 years.

BBC News reports that all tickets to the London event sold out 11 days prior to the show, which takes place this week from 25 to 29 May at the Royal Hospital. More than 15,000 people are expected to attend the sell-out event, with special interest being given to the exhibition gardens that, this year, follow the theme of ‘community’.
