Portugal rated best family destination in recent survey

Long a destination for those seeking out pristine beaches on the Atlantic or inland adventure on the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal has recently been revealed to be tops for family holidays in Europe, according to a recent survey conducted by the Post Office.

Beach holidays in Faro were shown to be especially popular, and among the best value destinations for family holidays in Europe, as costs of goods and services were far less than in other, similar destinations.

The Post Office survey, which polled British holidaymakers about their biggest gripes on holiday, found there to be little bad-mouthing about the Algarve in Portugal, where holidays in Faro shine as a top attraction to the region.

The Post Office’s Head of Travel Money, Sarah Munro, said that while some of the complaints of holidaymakers cannot be easily avoided – such as mobile phone charges in other countries – a little preparation can go a long way toward holiday savings.

“There is plenty families can do to avoid getting stung on holiday,” she said. “They should check excursion and attraction prices online before they go to avoid the most expensive and they should also pack kids’ beach items that could break the holiday budget if bought overseas.”

Families “should also take enough holiday cash to cover some unexpected costs, rather than pay out hefty charges for using plastic abroad,” Munro said.

Faro fared well against competing destinations in Europe, as attractions, meals and hotels were found to be among the best value in the continent.
