IATA reports flying affected by political unrest

The growth in demand for flights going to destinations outside Europe was reduced in February due to the unrest in the Middle East, according to the International Air Transport Association, as travellers opt for moreholidays in Europe.

They also believe that March’s Japanese earthquake and the resulting tsunami, along with the nuclear alert will hold back demand even more.

Venice city heritage saved by local residents

The residents of Venice claim to have won the battle to retain their city’s heritage, as local people have bound together to save the thousand year old fish market at the foot of Venice’s Rialto bridge, one of the cities’ best-loved institutions.

By implementing plans to expand the Venice docks in order to accommodate the large cruise ships that use the port, development the fish market could have been consigned to the cities’ history books. The main suppliers of the Rialto market would have had to move to the Italian mainland, spelling the end for a market that had been painted by Bellini and is important tourist attraction on holidays in Venice.

Larnaca, Paphos boost holidays in Cyprus in 2011

More tourists have been heading to the Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus in recent months for winter sun holidays with a noticeable influx of visitors from around the European Union.

Flights to Larnaca and Paphos have seen an increase in passengers from around the EU and the Russian Federation, with 11.7 per cent more Britons visiting Cyprus in February 2011 than did the year before.

Palma de Mallorca readies itself for the Superyacht Cup 2011

The Spanish resort of Palma de Mallorca is busy with preparations for the Superyacht Cup regatta 2011.

The event is to be run in Palma from 22 to 25 June and sixteen have registered for the regatta so far, including 2009′s winning yacht, Gliss.

Report finds United States the most popular destination from London airports

Flights to the United States were the most popular destination from London airports during 2010, according to a new report published by RDC Aviation. Spain took second place, with Germany third and Italy, France and Ireland following behind.

According to the report, nearly 13.9 million holiday makers flew out to the US airports from London in 2010.

Survey shows Brazil on the up

Brazil appears to be receiving a welcome lift in popularity, according to the results of the annual BBC World Service Country Rating Poll. The poll, conducted by GlobeScan/PIPA from a sample of 28,619 people from around the world, asked people to rate the influence of sixteen major nations, plus the European Union.

The results show positive views of Brazil have risen from 40 to 49 per cent from last year.

Traditional Souk Waqif still a draw in Doha

While Qatar has become a modern Middle Eastern nation boasting a sophisticated culture and up-to-date facilities, the traditional open-air market in Doha, Souk Waqif, has remained a top draw for tourists visiting the city.

According to Kevin Brass of The National, a publication from the neighbouring United Arab Emirates, the Souk Waqif provides travellers with “a fusion of sights and smells” and “provides a welcome break” from the otherwise modern city.

Comic-Con International returns to San Diego this summer

Quite possibly the world’s biggest assembly of fans of capes and cowls – and certainly one of the best known – the San Diego Comic-Con International will wing its way back to the city in Southern California this summer for its 41st edition.

While all the classic characters will be there, from the artists and writers of hits such as Batman or the X-Men, to actors and directors of their feature film equivalents, many comic enthusiasts take the opportunity for a holiday in San Diego over the weekend in July.
