UK beaches pass clean water standards with flying colours

Holidaymakers looking for a traditional seaside break by Britain’s coast will find the UK‘s beaches are in great shape, beating last year’s bathing quality standards according to the producers of the Good Beach Guide.

461 beaches across the country have been given the top award for bathing water hygiene by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS). In fact, this year’s results have been the third highest number in the Good Beach Guide’s 24 year history.

Volcanic ash cloud disperses in time for Bank Holiday getaway

This weekend nearly two million people in the UK will be relieved to hear that the ash cloud created by an Icelandic volcano eruption will not affect their holiday plans.

Many holidaymakers faced the prospect of having their travel plans disrupted as atmospheric ash from Mount Grimsvotn moved throughout international air space, causing initial flight delays and cancellations.

Further flight disruption from ash cloud now ‘unlikely’

Further UK flight disruption from the Icelandic ash cloud has been said to be ‘unlikely’, according to the latest forecasts from experts.

The Icelandic volcano that caused the ash cloud, according to the Department of Transport, has “currently paused its eruptions and Met Office modelling indicates that significant disruption between now and the end of the weekend is unlikely.”

Australia named as top backpacker tourist destination

Despite the strong Australian Dollar and heavy competition from other destinations, Australia has been named the number one destination for backpackers.

According to a survey by the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC), the results of which were announced at the ATEC backpacker and Youth Industry Conference in Airlie Beach last week, Down Under came out on top for adventurous holidaymakers.

Newcastle set to ‘Take That’ and party!

Newcastle and Sunderland both expect a welcome boost to visitor numbers this weekend thanks to pop band Take That and the Evolution Festival.

The Manchester band has been scheduled to play concerts in Sunderland, and the Evolution festival will be held in Newcastle, hosting acts such as Iggy Pop, Plan B, Tinie Tempah and The Kills.

Florida asks residents to share a little sunshine with others

Florida’s tourism body, Visit Florida, has launched a new campaign to attract more visitors to the US state. Titled ‘Share a little sunshine’, the campaign encourages residents to share photographs, invitations and recommendations with friends and family in order for them to visit on holiday.

The campaign website lets people send their loved ones digital postcards and videos to entice them to visit. These postcards carry special offers for recipients as an incentive. As a thank you, the senders of these invites then qualify for a sweepstakes to win their own Florida holiday.

Price wars drive down airfare costs for the Aussie traveller

Airfares to destinations such as Fiji, Hong Kong and Bali have come down in price during the last two years, as operators conduct a discount war to attract holidaymakers..

An Australian travel group recently analysed the prices of 30 international flights from Sydney this month and compared them with the same flights two years ago. Fifteen of those fares tumbled in price since 2009, even as fuel costs have increased.
