‘Lacklustre’ holiday sales mean summer bargains

The canny bargain hunter could be able to get themselves a great deal when booking a summer holiday this year. As many UK holidaymakers have been slower to book their annual vacations than usual, leading travel companies to reduce their prices.

According a UK travel website, Britons heading on holiday can catch discounts of up to 55 per cent and it is likely that these prices will continue into the summer.

“We are seeing some of the best summer deals in years,” said Joel Brandon-Bravo, managing director of Travelzoo.

“The combination of a difficult economy, uncertainty fuelled by the recent ash cloud and potential airline strikes has led to an extremely late booking market, which, in turn, has led to these great discounts.”

Another survey, conducted by Sunshine, reported that 56 per cent of holidaymakers interviewed planned to travel later than normal this year. Four out of ten people said that their decision to book was influenced by the expectation of warmer weather here in Britain.

While some are opting for summer holidays in London or the August festivals in Edinburgh, a 21 per cent rise in bookings for autumn holidays had also been noted.

Travel industry analysts GfK Ascent also chimed in recently, reporting booking for summer holidays fell substantially during March and April. They say that traditional holiday destinations such as Spain, Italy and Greece continue to be popular; yet the best deals are to be found by booking a holiday to Tunisia, Turkey or Egypt.
