Graphic Novels make their mark at the Melbourne Writers Festival

Comics, or graphic novels, are to make up an important part of this year’s Melbourne Writers Festival. This is no showcase for Desperate Dan or Dennis the Menace, though, as serious visual narrative is the order of the day here.

For example, Shaun Tan’s ‘The Arrival’, a graphic work without words, was put to music and shown to an audience at the festival in Australia last Friday night. The Festival has also commissioned a graphic newspaper titled ‘Drawn from Life’ and features work by Jim Woodring, Nicki Greenberg and Mandy Ord.

Braving the wind mud and rain for UK festivals

This bank holiday weekend will see many people braving the weather to attend one of the many music and art festivals taking place around the UK. Even though forecasters have predicted three days of rain and cool temperatures, thousands are turning up to festival venues armed with tents and warm clothes.

“Festival-goers hoping for summer sunshine were forced to wade through the mud in their wellies as they arrived at Reading,” according to Ryan Kisiel of the Daily Mail.
“Twenty-four hours before a note will be played, thousands converged on the site armed with boots and winter coats to get the best tent pitches.”
The Monday bank holiday is expected to be the driest of the three days, with only the possibility of the odd shower, yet the maximum temperature is only likely to be 17C. Saturday will see rain and a high of 19C and Sunday will be a mixture of sun and rain with temperatures hitting a high of 19C again.
