A compendium of the world’s best destinations for hitting the trails and roughing it for a while has been revealed. It features locations all over the globe, but quality trails have been found to be more easily accessible for those on holidays in the USA.
The United States is the only country to make two appearances on the list. Firstly, the list includes the Appalachian Trail, long been lauded in the country and the world as the ultimate hiker’s challenge – 2,150 miles long, it starts in the south near Atlanta and winds north past cities such as New York and Boston.
Another entry on the list, as reported by Reuters, was Zion National Park, an outpost in the American West. Travellers wanting to see this dramatic landscape could combine a visit with a trip to the nearby Grand Canyon or a more glitzy holiday in Las Vegas.
The USA’s neighbour to the north also has an entry on the list – The West Coast Trail, which winds through the Pacific Rim National Park in British Columbia, near to the Canadian city ofVancouver. The trail originally functioned as route for shipwreck survivors looking to get to safety in colonial times.
South America also offers hikers unique experiences and opportunities to explore remnants of the once-mighty Inca Empire on the Machu Picchu Trail in Peru. In nearby Chile, hikers can also enjoy a trek around the Paine Circuit in the Torres del Paine National Park.
Popular trails in Europe include Pembrokeshire Coast Path in Wales and Camino Frances, which bridges Spain and France.
Other popular hiking trails can be found in China, Tanzania and New Zealand.
