World’s top hiking destinations revealed

A compendium of the world’s best destinations for hitting the trails and roughing it for a while has been revealed. It features locations all over the globe, but quality trails have been found to be more easily accessible for those on holidays in the USA.

The United States is the only country to make two appearances on the list. Firstly, the list includes the Appalachian Trail, long been lauded in the country and the world as the ultimate hiker’s challenge – 2,150 miles long, it starts in the south near Atlanta and winds north past cities such as New York and Boston.

A summer of music and performance continues in Prague

Visitors to Prague throughout the summer will find that the Czech city’s a bustling hub of arts and music – and that trend looks set to continue, as the Verdi Festival will make its annual appearance in the city for two weeks at the end of August.

With the first Verdi Festival having been held back in 1993, the tribute to the 19th century Italian composer is now fast approaching its 20th year, and many opera fanatics opt for city breaks in Prague during the final two weeks of August so they can catch a smattering of the composer’s works in the grand setting.

Star Trek park plans beam down to Jordan

Developers in the Middle East have just revealed plans for a $1.5 billion dollar Star Trek theme park in Jordan, allowing Trekkies to boldly visit Aqaba, a Jordanian port and popular tourist destination on the Red.

Visitors to the new park, which is planned to open as early as 2014, could easily visit a combination of destinations in the region for twin-centre holidays, as Aqaba lies close to other regional hotspots such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Berlin exhibit delves into Iron Curtain espionage

Espionage, disguises and double agents gripped the imaginations of both the East and West throughout the Cold War and, nearly twenty years after its conclusion, an artist in Berlin has debuted a photography exhibition of spies in their disguises.

Although the methods the spies used – dark glasses, false moustaches and wigs – may seem clichéd only a few decades later, each formerly-confidential photograph shows a spy in one of their disguises. And the collection appeals to both history buffs and the more art-minded on city breaks in Berlin.

Rock en Seine expands in Paris

One might not automatically associate the elegant French capital with hard rock, hip hop and alternative music, but Rock en Seine will deliver a healthy mix of these three styles and more to Paris later this month.

Held in the Saint Cloud area of the City of Light, Rock en Seine represents a non-traditional reason for people to choose holidays in Paris. While many visitors flock to see major Paris attractions such as the Arc de Triomphe or the Louvre each year, the city’s biggest draws from 26 to 28 August could well be the Foo Fighters and the Arctic Monkeys.

Hirst connects dots across New York, Paris, London and more

British visual artist Damien Hirst will attempt to connect the world with his art early next year, by holding concurrent exhibitions of his ‘Spot’ paintings in cities including New York, London, Los Angeles, Paris, Rome, Athens, Geneva and Hong Kong.

Hirst told the New York Times that he’d always hoped to set up a multi-venue exhibition of this series of his work, and had previously laid the groundwork at the Tate Britain and Saatchi Gallery in London. However, those plans fell through and this will be the first successful attempt at such a display.

London debuts Abu Dhabi travel exhibit

The National Geographic store in London will play host to an exhibition of a range of experiences available on holidays in Abu Dhabi, ramping up awareness of holiday possibilities in the emirate during a high season of tourist activity in the English capital.

The photography exhibition has been scheduled to run for one week from 29 August. Its subjects include historical and cultural documents, as well as photos of well-known landmarks and pictures of the leisure activities available in Abu Dhabi.
