Winter Carnival wins Event of the Year

Outside Montreal, Quebec City’s best loved Winter Carnival has been awarded Event of the Year at the Canadian Tourism Awards.

The 57th annual Quebec Winter Carnival was recognised at the prestigious awards ceremony for one of its most successful years to date – a season that welcomed record-breaking numbers of visitors and hosted popular family-friendly events for all ages.

“This proof of recognition is the result of strategic choices over the last few years. Every year, we strive to offer things that have never been seen before and to create the most innovative and audacious programming,” said Carnival general director Jean Pelletier.

“Carnival continues to prove its popularity with international visitors, tourists, and overseas media.”

Each year, the Winter Carnival combines classic activities with new and exciting attractions – a strategy that helps the carnival maintain its rich history and tradition while still offering new activities for visitors year after year.

The Quebec Winter Carnival features everything from sporting competitions to ice skating, live performances ice sculptures and hot chocolate by the fire.

This year, the Quebec Winter Carnival is entering its 58th year, and organisers are preparing for its biggest season yet – with the full program of activities and nightlife set to be announced early in the New Year.

“From one winter to the next, the Carnival enriched its activity program. We have since added even more popular activities, such as winter sports, snow sculptures, and activities based on the traditional Quebec lifestyle, such as canoe races and dogsled races,” the Carnival website said.

“The Quebec Winter Carnival is the largest winter carnival in the world today, and is third on the List of Top Carnivals after the famous carnivals in Rio and New Orleans.”

The 2012 Quebec Winter Carnival runs from 27 January to 12 February.
